Regiocup Zuid 2009 impression

Ingezonden door: Jaco

After a year of following the local races I wanted to make a final photo summary and give a brief personal impression  of the races.

The Regio Cup South, a Formula / Slalom windsurf series, had been organized last year by Surfclub ZW7 and took place at two different venue's: Kabbelaarsbank, Grevelingen meer and Schotsman, Veerse meer in the Netherlands.

Luckily, I was able to witness the final three races with my photo and video camera. And had the opportunity to sit in the race committee boat once. Which I must say was really enjoyable. I had been on race committee boats several times but only with sailing events.

The differences in mentality of sailboat racing versus windsurf racing are quite remarkable. The same ISAF rules do apply but the interpretation and the manner these rules are applied are much more strict in sailboat racing. Even though the racing was pretty close sometimes and at its sharpest, I hardly heard any shouting or cursing. This is "not done" at Regio cup level and I heard that this series is mainly meant for the race surfers to gear up for the larger events and for the beginner to get used to racing. But the main thing here is to have fun.

Below I wanted to show some individual action: gybing around the mark, nobody nearby the only pressure is, don't fall and try to keep on planing.

Group action: buoy rounding's (gybing), feel the pressure of your competitors around you and go for the best position. If you come out of it first with clear wind you feel good, it is a victory by itself. Up to the next mark. When you win a place it is even better.

Collisions: I haven't seen many , luckily only equipment damage.

For the people who want to try racing sometime, they can join easily in the silverfleet. You don't need a sailnumber and it is defintely fun to try it out, to see if you like it. Check: regiocup.nl or ZW7.nl for the calendar. You will become a better windsurfer for sure and will learn alot about tuning of your equipment. What works and what doesn't work for you.

The more people will join the better the level of the fleet will become, so also your personal level!!

Looking forward to the new race season. Hopefully I see you all there!
